there are three types of people in our world “There are three types of people in this world, People who watch things happen, people who make things happen, and people who wonder what just happened”. -Vince Lombardi I got this in an e-mail from my boss @Dragonfireracing.com that caught my attention. I have spent the majority of my time helping a few riders (Blake Hamilton, Erica Cook, John Chapman along with a few other guys) prepare for Ponca City and Loretta Lynn’s. so as I read this statement it reminds me of preparing for the summer nat’ls. Heat, humidity, not understanding the true fundamentals of how to prepare. I still remember being the one watching things happen. It seemed like I was just filling the starting gate, no one knew of me. I was simply in true love with the sport although knowing nothing of it. Instead, I was the one watching riders make things happen. I stuck with it, took the lessons that motocross can teach and was fortunate enough to be able to watch Ricky, JS7, Walker, Ernesto, Canard, etc. as amateurs to study from. So I spent time, money, all my effort to learn but only come up just a bit short of each goal it seemed. And also, keep in thought that I had no idea I wanted to live this dream as a profession. Time kept going like it always has in the past and I thought of making this dream a reality in about ’97. Although it never crossed my mind until I was getting onto 125’s. So I chased it like a hobo chasing a $1 in a wind storm! Made a few things happen. Far & few between although, I am very proud of my accomplishments! Small success on the amateur circuit and the same in the pros. Just a noch away from my full potential. I’m starting to get the broken record effect, you? Haha..and after getting my feet wet/chasing my tail I made changes and straightened my arrow if you will. I made it clear mentally, set my goals and was watching them turn from dreams to reality right in front of my eyes. San Diego SX round, 2006, my team and I knew what needed to happen and therefore we set out for that and nothing less. We lined up last in the second heat (I was last in day qualifying positions!) but we sprinted to the first turn getting there fifth when I found myself bumping elbows with Australian Michael Byrne as I jumped in behind to go to school. We made it through the switch back and jumped to the fast line on the outside as we both cruised around the top of would be my last and possibly favorite berm in my entire life! We made quick work of a double into a whoop section and up the face…………………………………………………………………. All I could wonder is what just happened? Now, 3 and half years later, I haven’t ridden since, there has been plenty of learning all over again. I began to work inside the MX industry to continue my presence (+ I feel at home here). I am in the perfect position to watch and learn again. But, not without some of the best mentors like Larry Hughes, Joe Phillips, Jimmy Button to name a few. I have slowly been working back into things only on the other side this time, I feel ready to make things happen again. But only time can tell if success is my journey down my path. God be with us! now see if you relate to this stastement?
